Ambulance used to transport liquor

Nongpoh, May 30: Three people were arrested today for misusing an ambulance to transport liquor from Byrnihat to an area under Umsning in Ri Bhoi district.
Acting on a tip off, police from Police Outpost stopped the ambulance last evening at around 10:15 pm and found crates of liquor staked in the vehicle.
The three occupants of the ambulance namely Jefferson Nongbsap of Umran Niangbyrnai (driver), Alfonse Wahlang from Umran Niangbyrnai and Dauglas Kharkrang, from Lumnongrim, Byrnihat were summarily arrested.
It may be noted here that amidst the Covid-19 pandemic which is wreaking havoc in the district, the district administration has admitted that there is a shortage of ambulances to cater to the needs of Covid-19 patients. In this backdrop, this misuse of the ambulance by the three arrested men gains even more significance.
The ambulance bearing registration number ML-10-C-3475 belongs to the Dorbar Shnong of Umran Niangbyrnai in Ri Bhoi District.
A case has been registered against the three men and police are presently investigating the case and whether other public vehicles are being used to transport liquor.
