Shillong, April 24: The A’chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) has demanded that the state government institutes a high level inquiry into reports of corruption by officers of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).
“(We demand) for immediate (institution of a ) high-level inquiry by the CBI and followed by stern action against such corrupt officers…,” AIJIF director Chingsrang D Sangma said in a statement issued on Saturday.
He said the organization has also submitted a memorandum to Power Minister, James K Sangma for further necessary action on the matter.
Chingsrang said there are serious charges of corruption, malpractice and nepotism against MeECL officers and engineers.
“It is very saddening to know that officers or engineers of the MeECL are using their office for personal benefits and giving work orders to their family members especially people, among others, like Pradip Kumar Shullet, Executive Engineer who has been misusing his position to give work orders to his wife, sister and brother,” Chingsrang said.
“It is revealed that Pradip Kumar Shullet had fraudulently split large quotations into around 106 small quotations below Rs. 50,000 to avoid floating of tenders in the public domain so that they could directly award them to his wife’s firm,” he said.
It may be noted here that Pradip Kumar Shullet was accused of corruption during his tenure and a complaint was filed against him in 2018, following which he had allegedly erased all emails and deactivated the email account of the inspectorate to avoid scrutiny.
“This sort of action is one of the main reasons why the MeECL has been bleeding and performing so poorly all these years resulting in crores of rupees of loss not just to the Corporation but also to the State and its people,” Chinsrang added.
