Demand for Mawhati C&RD Block

Shillong, Aug 4: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Synjuk Rangbah Shnong of different villages including Mawhati, Sonidan, Umlaper and Umsiang led by its MDC Charles Marngar met C&RD minister Hamlet Dohling to demand for a separate C&RD Block for Mawhati in Ri-bhoi district.
Speaking to media persons, chairman of a JAC, Marius Jyrwa said that the distance from the present Umsning C&RD Block to Umsiang area bordering Jagi Road, Assam is approximately 100 kms and this has created a lot of hurdles for the local headman and the citizens to meet their diversified needs when it comes to availing different schemes sanctioned by the state government.
“According to the 2011 census there are over 21 thousand population residing in these 52 villages hence the JAC felt the need to demand for a separate C&RD Block in order to accommodate developmental activities for the people residing in these border areas,” said Jyrwa.
Jyrwa informed that the inhabitants of these areas are forced to shell out more money and also waste valuable time since the present CRD Block is 100 kms away from the villages and this has created a lot of inconvenience to the people of the region. He added that the JAC is willing to donate land for the construction of the C&RD Block office so as to bring governance closer to the people at the earliest.
“We are not saying that developmental activities do not happen in our villages but we are confident that with administration being closer to the people it will help contribute to various developmental activities throughout the border areas in the region,” he added.
Jyrwa also said that the Minister has agreed to take up the matter with the Chief Minister as such matters need to be taken up in the cabinet.
