Family get impromptu call from a rare winged visitor

Mairang, Sep 22: A family residing in Mawlieh Laitdom under West Khasi Hills District got a surprise visit from a very unusual caller on September 20 when they found a common Himalayan might heron sitting on the porch of their house.

Narrating the incident, Phren Kurbah said that he had emerged from his house to spend some time on his porch at around 8 pm after having his dinner and was very surprised to see the bird sitting nonchalantly there. “I have never seen this kind of bird before and I immediately captured it. I attempted to feed it rice, insects but it refused to eat these,” Kurbah said.

The very next morning, Kurbah informed office of Meghalaya Times which in turn got the family in contact with the wildlife department.

Meanwhile officials from the department at Nongstoin have identified the bird as a Common Malayan Might Heron which is rarely seen nowadays. They also expressed their appreciation to Kurbah who had rescued the bird and handed it over to them.

The Forester wildlife Nongstoin, Y R Synjoin meanwhile informed that the bird will soon be released in the Community Reserve Forest or the Miewsyier Community Reserve Forest after approval from higher authorities in the department and after tests have been conducted by veterinary doctors.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the bird has an injured wing.
