Jowai, Oct 06: The Hynñiewtrep Border Disputed Redressal Forum (HBDRF) has demanded the immediate stop of road construction work presently being conducted by the Assam government from Tahpat till Lapangap in the border areas of West Jaintia Hills District.

The HBDRF had demanded that the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills District, Garod LSN Dykes and the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Jaintia Hills District Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Thombor Shiwat intervene on the issue.

“The Assam government had begun building this road from Tahpat till Lapangap in 2019 after which the residents of Lapangap and the JAC of Lapangap-Khanduli Border Area raised a complaint before the Deputy Commissioner on October 16 and Novemeber 6, 2019 because the road was being constructed through the agricultural fields of the residents of Lapangap,” the chairman of the forum, Chandame Sungoh said yesterday.

“Even though the district administration had accepted our complaint, it has not taken any action on the issue till date with the authorities in West Karbi Anglong District or the Assam government,” he added.

This, he opined, is because the West Jaintia Hills District administration is not taking the matter seriously.

He also informed that the residents of Lapangap have produced their land holding certificates to the JHADC and the DC’s office to justify their claims and have handed over copies of the same to the Border Magistrate to act accordingly but these were returned to them on October 26, 2019.

He also alleged that the Assam government is bringing in a lot of development work in the border areas in an attempt to usurp the land there.

He also said that the DC has informed the residents that no developmental work can be stopped as it is for the betterment of the border areas.
