HNLC peace talks to be taken up with Shah

Shillong, July 21: BJP leader and Cabinet Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek has informed that the issue of peace talks with the proscribed Hynniewtrep national Liberation Council (HNLC) will be taken up for discussion with Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.
Shah is visiting the state for two days starting from July 24.
Hek made this comment today in the backdrop of the HNLC stating recently that it is not ready to shun violence until the government appointed an interlocutor to facilitate the peace talks. Before this, the HNLC had claimed responsibility for an IED blast at the police reserve in East Jaintia Hills.
In October last year, a memorandum was submitted by Hek to the Minister of State for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy requesting his intervention on the need to invite the HNLC for peace talks.
Hek however said due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the government could not do anything.
“So it is my humble request that until and unless dialogue takes place, the HNLC should not have any activities against the public or against the government. They have to be patient as during the pandemic, the Centre is not willing to meet anybody,” he stated.
“(In fact) last time, Amit Shah called me to his office but I was late, by the time I reached he had got another meeting to attend,” he added.
Hek said that Shah will be accompanied by the DoNER Minister during his visit.
