SHILLONG, Aug 03: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has demanded that the State government ensures that all qualified candidates of the State are allowed to apply for the COVID-19 contractual jobs.

In a letter to the Health Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek today, JSU-Shillong Circle president, Treiborlang Suchen said the Health Department through the Director of Health Services (MI), had invited applications for COVID-19 workers on August 2.

He said that as per the statement of the DHS (MI), it was understood that the government will invite applications for the purpose, only from those youths who recently came back to the State from different parts of India.

“This statement made by the senior officer of the Health Department has infused anger and frustration amongst our citizens, who feel that all eligible candidates within the State should be allowed to apply for the vacancies,” Suchen said.

Requesting the Health Minister’s intervention in the matter, the JSU leader said, “In view of this, the previous statement may be please retracted and rectified, with provision that all qualified candidates of the state, in different medical or paramedic courses can apply for the Covid-19 contractual jobs.”

According to him, the State already has no dearth of qualified candidates who are still unemployed and can be utilised for the purpose.

The JSU further requested the Health Department to initiate a fair recruitment process, with special preference to appoint indigenous citizens of the state.
