Man arrested on charges of raping minor

Tura, Aug 27:

The district police of West Garo Hills yesterday arrested one of the accused in the sexual assault case of a 16 year old girl and the lookout is on for the other two accused.

Allegedly on August 20 at about 5:30 pm, a 16 year old from the plain belt was brutally raped by three men, who are former members of an NGO based in the plain belt of Garo Hills.

As per the FIR filed by the uncle of the victim, the teen was returning home after her tuition when she was accosted by the men who forcefully took her into the house of one of the accused and sexually assaulted her. The uncle also alleged that the parents of the accused where the girl was taken, was also present in the house but did nothing to stop the gruesome rape.

The girl, as per the FIR was gagged and bound before the sexual assault.

The arrest of one of the accused came after he took to social media to claim that he was in a relationship with the victim and that the act was consensual and uploaded over 30 pages of conversations between him and the girl in WhatsApp chat. The arrested accused also tried clearing the name of the other two accused, who he stated were not involved in the act at all.

“We have arrested him last night and he is under our custody. Questioning into the matter is currently on and we hope to arrest the other two accused named in the FIR. As the case falls under POCSO, whether the act was done with consensus or not, does not matter. A full investigation will reveal what happened and whether others were involved or not,” said the Superintendent of Police, Dr. M. G. R. Kumar.

Police sources added that the statement of the victim is yet to be recorded.
