NHAI served deadline to address waterlogging

Nongpoh, Sept 19: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People, North Khasi Hills District in Ri Bhoi has served a 2-week deadline to the National Highway Authority of India to renovate and expand the drainage systems along the National Highway 6 from Jorabat to Umiam.
The decision to serve the ultimatum to the NHAI was made in the backdrop of waterlogging which has been occurring in many parts of Ri Bhoi District especially during monsoon seasons.
FKJGP, North Khasi Hills District president, Luistar Lyngdoh, expressed discontentment over the state of affairs relating to the drainage system constructed while implementing the four-lane project in Ri Bhoi District. He also accused the contractors of failing to comply with the provision for construction work of a proper drainage system along the highway.
“Before the four-lane project in Ri Bhoi District, there were no reports of such waterlogging and it is only after this project was implemented that many parts of the district had to face this problem of flooding which has resulted in a lot of inconvenience and has affected the daily commuters plying through the National Highway 6,” Lyngdoh stressed.
In this regard, the FKJGP has strongly asked the NHAI to immediately start renovating all drainage systems in the district to prevent any waterlogging in the future failing which the federation said that it will be compelled to take other steps and also to demand that the collection of toll is stopped.
