Road stuck in limbo for 25 years

Mairang Sept 10: An agreement entered upon by the state’s health department, the dorbar shnong of Sangshong in West Khasi Hills district and land owners has only been partially executed even after the passage of 25 years since its signing.
This was revealed through information sought through the RTI which showed that as per this agreement which was signed in 1996, two roads were supposed to be constructed connecting the Shillong-Nongstoin road to Tirot Sing Memorial Civil Hospital, Mairang while the second road would connect Sangshong with the hospital.
This RTI was filed by the Sordar of Sangshong, Ambrose Marwein and the information received prompted the executive committee of the Dorbar Shnong Sangshong to convene a meeting to discuss this issue. After this meeting it was informed while the road from the Shillong-Nongstoin road to the hospital has been completed, no work has been done on the other section.
The members of the executive committee also informed that as no progress was seen in the construction of this road, the dorbar shnong, through the MGNREGA scheme had started constructing a link road so that the residents of Sangshong who need to visit the hospital can do so with ease.
“Even this could not be completed due to opposition from a few of the land owners who now want the road to be diverted to another area which is in violation of the agreement already signed,” members of the executive committee informed.
The members of the Dorbar Shnong also informed that the matter has been taken up with the MLA of Mairang, Metbah Lyngdoh who is also the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and that even a copy of the RTI report has been forwarded to him.
Stating that the matter has also been discussed with the concerned government officials, the Dorbar Shnong has warned that it will be forced to act if the terms of the agreement are not upheld in toto.
