Tynsong slams opportunists, warns against profiteering

Shillong, April 23: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong today said that concerned authorities have been asked to take action against ‘opportunists’ who are taking advantage of the situation arising due to a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Reacting to the sudden hike in the prices of essential commodities and overcharging of taxi fares, he said, “We have already instructed all the concerned departments be it Food and Civil Supplies or be it Transport department to make sure that the prices fixed by them should be adhered to in totality,” Tynsong said.
“We have also issued orders to all Deputy Commissioners to monitor and make sure that opportunists cannot take advantage of the situation,” he said.
Tynsong said that the government has directed the transport department to ensure that drivers of commercial vehicles do not take advantage of the situation.
“They (commercial vehicles) cannot and they should not as we have already considered whatever grievances raised by the concerned stakeholders (by reducing the prices of petrol and diesel). Therefore, I would like to appeal and warn, please don’t take advantage of the situation. Yes we need to earn but you need to understand the difficulties faced by the residents of the state,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Tynsong also urged the people not to resort to panic buying and assured that the state has sufficient stock of essential commodities.
“At the same time we appeal to all traders that you don’t have any crisis we don’t have any crisis at all so therefore let the prevailing market rate continue as usual,” he said while informing that the DCs have been asked to penalize such traders if found taking advantage of the current situation.
He also requested citizens to come forward and complain against such illegal activities.
